DeSci (Decentralized Science) is a grassroots movement that uses blockchain and Web3 tools to transform how scientific research is funded, shared, and validated. It aims to eliminate bureaucratic middlemen and expensive journal paywalls, allowing scientists to share data openly and patients to directly fund rare disease cures.

Why DeSci Exists
Traditional science faces major bottlenecks:
  • Bureaucratic Funding: Researchers spend enormous time applying for scarce grants, making them risk-averse.
  • Paywalled Knowledge: Major journals charge high fees to publish and read, restricting public access.
  • Centralized Control: Elite institutions dictate what gets researched and published.
Core Pillars of DeSci
  • Decentralized Funding: Uses decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and crowdfunding to pool money globally for underfunded or unconventional projects. [1]
  • Transparent Publishing: Stores peer reviews and data on public ledgers, enabling open-access reading and tracking exactly who contributed to a finding. [1, 2]
  • Intellectual Property Ownership: Converts intellectual property into digital assets like IP-NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), allowing researchers to retain ownership and monetize their discoveries.

“DeFi”
(Decentralized Finance)

DeFi, short for Decentralized Finance, is a blockchain-based financial system. It replaces traditional intermediaries like banks and brokerages with peer-to-peer networks and automated smart contracts, allowing anyone with an internet connection to lend, borrow, trade, and earn interest without requiring permission.

How DeFi Works
Instead of relying on a centralized bank to process transactions, DeFi runs on distributed ledgers (like the Ethereum blockchain). The key pillars include:
    • Smart Contracts: Self-executing digital agreements written in code that automatically enforce transaction terms.
    • Digital Wallets: Applications that hold your digital assets and act as your “account” without requiring you to share personal information.
  • dApps: Decentralized applications that provide the user interface to interact with these financial protocols.
